off-grid bush cabin
Looking for a place to escape their busy lives, our clients approached us to design and build an off-grid hunting cabin where they could relax and recharge.
Nestled in the bush, this one bedroom cabin was positioned to maximise the perfect view of the hazards and the bay in the distance, while still keeping the building oriented for the sun.
Natural materials were selected to connect the building to its environment. A solid Blackbutt timber benchtop is a feature in the kitchen while the Blackbutt timber overlay flooring and custom made Tas oak detailing create a warm and welcoming vibe. The high ceilings and netting balustrade create a spacious feel while the sunken lounge with wood heater is a cosy retreat.
The building sits on an insulated raft slab. The timber-framed roof and wall structure is lined with vapour permeable sarking to mitigate condensation buildup. North facing double glazed windows provide extra protection from the cold.
Although the cabin only has a 6-star energy rating, the small footprint combined with the wood heating and passive solar orientation makes it a very efficient and cosy place to be. The one water tank and one lithium battery also change the way you think, live and consume resources in the building, simply because both your water and power can run out if you waste them. This building creates its own energy and forces the occupant to use it efficiently.
